Well, I guess I knew it would come one day. It seems most boys have a broken bone story. I just didn't expect Caleb to get one at the age of three! Or that it would be from a very minor fall.
He was riding his bike, and the front tire got caught between the sidewalk and the grass, and he toppled over. Not even that big or hard of a fall, but he must have landed on it just right to get a clean horizontal break across the bone. Poor guy.
I knew it looked bad right away:
OF COURSE, David was traveling out of town for work. Blah! Murphy's Law of traveling husbands.
It was around 6:30 or 7:00 when it happened. So I was debating whether or not to take him to the ER, or to let him sleep and then take him to the doctor in the morning. David messaged our friend who is an EMT, and he said to take him to the ER. I was conflicted about it because he was running around and wrestling with Nathan and not even complaining about it. As much as I didn't want to take him, I knew it would give me peace of mind. Our last ER trip for a cut he had on is eye had us sitting in the waiting room for 4 hours, and we gave up because his pain went away. I was just imagining us sitting in the hospital until 3 in the morning.
We called around to find out different wait times at the ERs around us. (Good idea, David!) Texas Children's - the one we went to for the eye - had an 8 hour wait!!!! Um, no thanks. The next available spot for Memorial Hermann Katy's online check-in was 2:45 a.m. St. Catherine's said 2 hour wait. But we hit the jackpot with Memorial Hermann in Memorial City. The lady said one guy came in and got seen within minutes. I did the online check-in, and we got a spot for 9:45. (Man, we're lucky to live in a big city with so many options!
So David's brother was able to come out and stay at the house while Nathan was sleeping. Thankfully, I didn't have to wrangle two kids waiting in the ER!
We got there right on time. It was so quiet. We were seen right away. I didn't even realize they have a children's ER there! Score! So everyone was super sweet to Caleb. Very gentle, talked sweetly, and gave him stickers. Of course it still required waiting in the room while they did the x-rays and our paper work...which is where these came in handy:
They are fun busy bag activities that some mom friends made and exchanged. One is a color matching with the clothespins, and the other one is stringing some felt pieces through a button on a string. He loved it! He did them over and over again.
So here is his x-ray. You can see the little break on is middle finger between the bottom two knuckles.
All wrapped up!
We got home around 11:45 p.m. Here he is sleeping with it. He's such a sweetie. He hasn't complained once about having the splint on or not being able to move his fingers. The doctors today were surprised he hadn't tried to take it off.
So they had us follow up with an orthopedic doctor today. He wanted to bandage it up to his wrist for a week! They put casting material on the bottom of his hand to stabilize it, and wrapped it with a bandage and tape. Look at that boxing glove! Poor guy. So our plan to do our first pool visit this weekend is going to be postponed. Praying he's able to keep it on for a whole week, and that it heals up perfectly when we have our follow-up next week.
